Join SURE on Friday, October 18, 2024, for a 2-hour roundtrip train ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (https://www.cvsr.org/) in Akron, OH. We have reserved a vintage enclosed passenger coach for the 10:00 am trip through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (to Peninsula, OH) and return.

We will then depart for Sugarcreek, OH for a private 90-minute guided tour of the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum (https://ageofsteamroundhouse.org/) following a lunch stop at a nearby restaurant.

The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum is a living testament to the golden era of railroading. This unique museum not only houses incredible locomotives, railroad cars, tools, and machinery but also serves as an active roundhouse where restoration specialists work to preserve these pieces of history. This site features a fully operational 18-stall brick roundhouse and a 115-foot turntable. The roundhouse was constructed in 2011 to originally house the private collection of a railroad executive. It is now operated as a non-profit organization.

Attendees must sign the following waiver (2023 Tour Waiver.pdf) to take the guided tour of the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum. Please bring the signed waiver with you on the day of the event. We will also have blank forms in case one is needed.

Please note that there will be no breakfast stop due to the early departure and travel time. So please plan for your breakfast accordingly.

We will be making a lunch stop at the Dutch Valley restaurant, featuring Amish cooking, in Sugarcreek around 1:15 pm. You can order from the full menu and separate checks will be provided. Please note that there will be no meal stop on the return trip to Monroeville due to the travel time.  Anticipated return to Monroeville is around 7:00 pm.

The cost is $70 per person which includes round trip motor coach transportation from Monroeville (7:00 am departure from the former Energy Center site).

Initial registration will be limited to SURE members and one guest each. If a SURE couple is bringing 2 nonmember guests, each SURE member must register separately and include one guest on each registration.  Advance registrations are required since the motorcoach seating is limited to 56 passengers.  A wait list will be maintained if that number is exceeded.

We can now accommodate more than one nonmember guest per member.

For those that find it more convenient to join the SURE group at the railroad station at 27 Ridge Street, Akron, OH, tickets will be available for $40 a person.  The railroad is best reached by taking the Pennsylvania and Ohio Turnpikes (to exit 218) and following I-76 west to Akron. Allow at least two hours (without stops) in travel time. There is no limit on these tickets. Please arrive by 9:30 am.

NOTE: Refunds for cancelations can only be considered up to September 28, 2024 (but only if a replacement can be found on the wait list) since SURE must make nonrefundable final payment to the coach company, museum and railroad in advance.

NOTE: The (one-level) museum can accommodate wheelchairs and closed toe shoes (sneakers are OK) are required on the tour. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad ADA car with a wheelchair lift is NOW available.

Any questions, please contact Dave Altman at (412) 605-8617 or at wpaacers@windsteam.net.

We hope that you can join us for this popular (and past sellout) SURE event!
