Join SURE on Friday, October 20, 2023 for our visit to the East Broad Top Railroad (https://eastbroadtop.com/) in Rockhill Furnace, PA. We will have a guided tour of their circa-1900 machine shop and roundhouse, a train ride behind their recently restored steam locomotive and trolley rides and admission to the nearby Rockhill Trolley Museum.
The railroad was built beginning in 1872 and is the only surviving 3-foot gauge common carrier railroad east of the Rocky Mountains. The Smithsonian has described it as one of the most intact 19th-century industrial sites in the country. Saved from scrapping by the Kovalchick family in 1956, it was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1964. It was not operating from 2012 until 2021.
Please note that here will be no breakfast stop due to the early departure time. So please plan for your breakfast accordingly. Lunch is on your own and there will be an operating food truck parked at the railroad station.
We will be making a dinner stop at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Altoona on the return trip to Monroeville. You can order from the full menu and separate checks will be provided. Anticipated return to Monroeville is around 8:00 pm.
The cost is $70 per person which includes round trip motor coach transportation from Monroeville (8:00 am departure from the former Energy Center site).
Initial registration will be limited to SURE members and one guest each. If a SURE couple is bringing 2 nonmember guests, each SURE member must register separately and include one guest on each registration. Advance registrations are required since the motorcoach seating is limited to 56 passengers. A wait list will be maintained if that number is exceeded.
For those that find it more convenient to join the SURE group at the railroad station at 421 Meadow Street (PA route 994), in Rockhill Furnace, tickets will be available for $45 a person. The railroad can be reached by taking US-522 North from Exit 180 (McConnellsburg/Mount Union) on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. There is no limit on these tickets. Please arrive by 10:45 am.
NOTE: Refunds for cancelations can only be considered up to September 19, 2023 (but only if a replacement can be found on the wait list) since SURE must make nonrefundable final payment to the coach company and railroad a month in advance.
NOTE: The trolley and passenger cars can accommodate wheelchairs. However, the shop tour requires a moderate amount of walking and involves some uneven surfaces, which may be difficult to navigate with a walker. Closed toe shoes (sneakers are OK) are recommended. Members may wait at the railroad station if they are uncertain about the shop tour.

We hope that you can join us for this popular (and past sellout) SURE event!
